The long nights of winter are the perfect time for stories… and for sky watching. Bright stars stand out against the inky blackness long before bedtime. Cold weather sets the stage to settle in for a good story. This program will combine both of these elements as we take a look at some fabulous tales hidden in the stars. From December 14 through January 5 tens of thousands of volunteers throughout the Americas take part in an adventure that has become a family tradition among generations. Families and students, birders and scientists, armed with binoculars, bird guides and checklists go out on an annual mission – often before dawn. For over one hundred years, the desire to both make a difference and to experience the beauty of nature has driven dedicated people to leave the comfort of a warm house during the Holiday season.
Each of the citizen scientists who annually brave snow, wind, or rain, to take part in the Christmas Bird Count makes an enormous contribution to conservation. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations – and to help guide conservation action.
From feeder-watchers and field observers to count compilers and regional editors, everyone who takes part in the Christmas Bird Count does it for love of birds and the excitement of friendly competition — and with the knowledge that their efforts are making a difference for science and bird conservation.
The count takes place within Count Circles, which focus on specific geographical areas and each circle is overseen by a Count Compiler. Count circles will be divided and areas assigned to participants at the meeting time and place below. If you are a beginning birder, you will be able to join a group that includes at least one experienced birdwatcher.
In addition, if your home is within the boundaries of a Count Circle, you can stay home and report the birds that visit your feeder.
On Saturday, January 12, 2013 beginning at 10:00 A.M. the Prairie Heritage Center will be hosting a Winter Bird Count. Although the information gathered at this event is not included in the Christmas Bird Count, it is a fun event for many to come together. No matter your birding experience… Stay for the afternoon, as last year many participated in the Bald Eagle Count.
This event is free for everyone and we look forward to seeing you. A few things to plan for as you prepare to attend this event: bring warm clothes (dress for the weather), a sack lunch (if you plan to stay for the afternoon), binoculars, spotting scope (if you have), and bird books.
See you on the Prairie for this GREAT winter event!

What is a Rockhound? Have you ever, while out on a walk or a hike, picked up an interesting or colorful rock and wondered why it looks different from all the others you see? Or have you chanced upon a fossilized rock and thought it would be nice to know what kind of animal or plant left its mark there? Perhaps you have come across a crevice or a hole in a rock containing natural mineral crystals and wondered what they were and how they got there? Or maybe you have asked yourself about the origin of a beautiful piece of stone or gem jewelry? If you have ever questioned any of these things, then there is probably a "rockhound" buried inside you.
A "rockhound" is someone who gets past the "wondering" stage and decides to actively collect, catalogue and study mineral and/or fossil specimens. There is nothing that will quite match the feeling of that first "real find" and it will certainly whet the appetite to pursue the hobby further. Those of us who are already collectors recommend it highly as a wonderful activity for both young and old; in fact, it can provide a real common interest for the whole family.
Family fun is the goal at this "rocking" event featuring geology experiments, activities, and crafts. Join us Thursday, January 17, 2012 at 6:30 P.M. to enjoy a fun filled evening for the entire family.

Few experiences can compare to stomping across freshly fallen snow on a pair of snowshoes. This activity is an excellent way to relax and get exercise at the same time! Hiking across the snow takes on a new meaning when you construct your own handmade pair of snowshoes!
The O’Brien County Conservation Board will be holding a snowshoe making class on Saturday, January 19 beginning at 1:00 P.M. Styles available include Ojibway, Huron, and Bear Paw. Each type has an advantage in different conditions, but all produce an exceptional quality product.
The material cost for the class is $135. A kit includes frames made of white ash, nylon lacing and bindings. When completed, you will only need to varnish them annually to keep them in shape for a lifetime.
Please review and complete the Participation Form and provide payment in the amount of $135.00 (per individual) to the Prairie Heritage Center, located at 4931 Yellow Ave., Peterson, Iowa 51047, on or before December 28, 2012 to insure your place in the Snowshoe Making Workshop.
Please call 712-295-7200 if you have any questions or if you wish to have a Participation Form sent to you.

Have you heard? The Star Lab has been such a huge success in our schools this week that Charlene, our O’Brien County Conservation Board’s Naturalist, will be having the Star Lab two weekends in a row at the Prairie Heritage Center. The original event is scheduled for Saturday, January 26th and she will also be presenting this great opportunity for you to enjoy this Saturday, January 19th. Both events will get started at 6:00 P.M.
Talk with your students that have experienced this great opportunity this week and many more will be experiencing the same next week. Our O’Brien County students have traveled to the moon, sat on Saturn’s rings, and went in search of constellations while learning of their stories of old.
Both events will begin at 6:00 P.M. and will include a Prairie Walk following the Star Lab presentation if you are able (not required to participate in this event), so dress accordingly. Of course this Saturday’s walk will not include the Full Moon, but can you think of a better place to star gaze? This Event Will Be Fun For ALL Ages & Free For Everyone To Enjoy!
Grab your gear and let’s travel through the stars!
