The O’Brien County Conservation Board will be hosting their Annual Eagle Watch at the Prairie Heritage Center on Saturday, March 2, 2013 from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M.
This year the Little Sioux Valley Conservation Association is excited to announce that Ty Smedes, author and photographer, will be joining this great event.
Join Ty Smedes for one or both of his slide presentations, the first at 11:30 A.M. and a second presentation at 2:00 P.M. He will reveal many incredibly interesting discoveries about the Bald Eagle and how they go about their everyday lives here in Iowa! See eagles eating fish while on the wing, photos which illustrate the age of younger eagles, an eagle nest diary, eagles flying with icicles on their toes, eagles diving, catching fish, and much more. Learn how researchers track bald eagle movements, where eagles come from that winter in Iowa. And listen to stories of confrontations between bald eagles and other species. This presentation will reveal many highlights of Ty’s Book “The Return of Iowa’s Bald Eagles”, which he will be signing and offering for sale. He will also have copies of Ty’s Book “Capturing Iowa’s Seasons”, which he will also be signing and offering for sale.
Ty’s photos have been published by many major magazines and book publishers. Specializing in landscapes, wildlife, and prairie wildflowers, he also loves to photograph and market photos of Iowa people and cultural events. He markets his photography and writings both locally and nationally to magazines and books, and sells matted prints as well as slides and digital images for publication. Ty has taught nature photography classes and is as an experienced Photo-Tour leader, having led nature photography tours to Yellowstone &Teton parks, as well as the Eastern Sierras, during the fall season. He was also co-leader of a nature photography tour to Brasil in 1996 and has led nature photography tours to East Africa in 2005, 2008, and 2010, as well as Botswana in 2006.
Information regarding Ty’s two books “Capturing Iowa’s Seasons” and “The Return of Iowa’s Bald Eagles” can be found on his website at www.smedesphoto.com.

Have you ever “listened” to the prairie? What stories might it tell? The answer to these questions can be found at the Prairie Heritage Center from now until the end of April!
The O’Brien County Conservation Board is pleased to bring another special exhibit to the Prairie Heritage Center. This exhibit, entitled “Listen to the Prairie – Farming in Nature’s Image,” was created by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and has been on tour since 2001. The Friends of Hartman Reserve Nature Center in Black Hawk County received a REAP Conservation Education Grant to bring the exhibit to Iowa and assist in its travels across the state. Ed Gruenwald, Hartman Reserve’s Nature Center Director explains, “What we are trying to do is to send a Smithsonian quality exhibit to small-town Iowa. We want to let all Iowan’s know that their stories and relationships with the land are important and worth sharing.”
The exhibit focuses on the tallgrass prairie ecosystem and how it has changed into one of the most productive agricultural lands on earth. The display leads viewers through the diverse prairie ecosystem and why it is important, the conversion of prairie to farmland, and how modern agriculture can maintain its viability while still protecting and preserving prairie lands for the future.
The exhibit has something to interest everyone! Touch screens, audio clips, and engaging artwork help to tell this interactive story. The exhibit is free of charge and can be viewed at the Prairie Heritage Center, just north of Hwy 10 on Yellow Ave. The Center’s hours are Wednesday – Friday from 9:00 – 4:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 – 4:00. For special groups, please call the center at 712-295-7200 to make special arrangements.
Don’t miss your chance to “Listen to the Prairie!”
