Housing
Sutherland is a cozy small town offering safety and security in a setting of shady streets and housing to fit all tastes and budgets.

  Education

Students living in Sutherland have a variety of options regarding their education.  Public school students are invited to attend the South O'Brien School District.  Attendance centers for K-6th grade are in Primghar and 7-12th graders go to the Paullina attendance center.  The school provides bussing to and from Sutherland to both of the attendance centers.
South O'Brien School District provides:

  • Alternative classes for special education students
  • Earth Day activities
  • Renaissance/FCA Spring Picnic
  • Small class sizes K-6
  • Individualized computer instruction in math and reading
  • Positive wolverine behavior program, grades K-6
  • Current K-12 technology labs
  • Instructional support Levy – 5 years
  • Advisory/Advisor program at the Junior High

If a parochial school is more to your liking, St. John Lutheran School is a short jaunt to the west, in the city of Paullina.

St. John’s offers a full state-certified elementary school from K-8 including academic, athletic, music and spiritual components. All teachers are state-certified. A 4 year old preschool is also offered, which meets 2 days a week. Enrollment is open to all students regardless of church membership.

For the convenience of families who also have children enrolled in the local school district, St. John’s school year calendar corresponds to that of the South O’Brien School District.

  Shopping

Sutherland's shopping experience is unique and fun.  Instead of the big box stores you get the pleasure of spending time in small shops such as L & E Variety, an old-time general store atmosphere with the latest goods.  It is a completely unique store serving as a gift shop, dry goods store, apothecary and office supply store.

Sutherland has the Main Market grocery store, Sutherland hardware and lumber supply, gift stores, restaurants and coffee shops.  And don't let the small town atmosphere fool you....of course Security State Bank has online banking.
